Joseph M. Cobo, CHBC is a founding principal
in the firm Cobo, Welzien, Bowers & Company, a Certified Public Accounting
and Consulting firm. Cobo, Welzien,
Bowers & Company was formed from a merger of Florida Medical Management
Consultants, Inc. and Welzien & Company CPA, P.A. leaders in the healthcare
field with over 60 years of combined experience in South Florida. Mr.
Cobo's diversified experience in the field of health care management varies
from solo groups to special consulting assignments in virtually every medical
specialty. Mr. Cobo has served as a
consultant to HCA, Tenet, Non-For-Profit hospitals and other multi-health care
systems in developing physician enhancement programs.
Mr. Cobo has also worked with specialties in developing
out-patient surgical and diagnostic facilities including the physician limited
partnership, facility design and operational structure of such facilities
including equipment purchasing and staffing.
He has had extensive experience with developing managed care networks in
a variety of specialties and providing contract negotiations. Mr. Cobo also has experience with group
practice development, mergers/acquisitions and practice appraisals. He is a Certified Healthcare Business
Consultant certified by the Institute of Certified Healthcare Business
Consultants. Cobo is a graduate of
Broward College and Florida Atlantic University with a Degree is Marketing
Management & Healthcare Administration.
Joseph Cobo has also served in the leadership role of
both professional organizations and community non-for-profits boards. He has been President of the Society of
Medical-Dental Management Consultants, The Institute of Certified Healthcare Consultants,
and most recently in 2007 was elected President of the newly merged National
Society of Certified Healthcare Consultants.
His community involvement includes serving on the board of the American
Red Cross, United Way of Broward County, Broward Education Foundation were he
currently serves as Chair-Elect, Take Stock In Children where he served as
chair for Broward County for two years and mentor students for seven years,
McNab Elementary Schools Advisor Council (SAC), Emergency Medical Services,
City of Fort Lauderdale Insurance Advisory Board, Workforce One Council Board Member and
also was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to serve on the Board of Commissioners
of The Broward County Housing Authority.
In September of 2007 Governor Charlie Crist appointed Mr.
Cobo to serve on the board of Commissions of the North Broward Hospital
District the Fifth largest healthcare system in the nation. In 2008, Mr. Cobo was awarded the Community
Service Award by the Latin Chamber of Commerce of Broward County
Joseph Cobo has taught extensively at the University of
Miami Medical School, Departments of Surgery, Orthopedics, Dermatology and
Internal Medicine Residency Programs.
Mr. Cobo has also been an invited speaker at NSU (Nova Southeastern
University) on The Business Side of Dentistry.
He has lectured at the County Medical Societies as well as other
professional organizations. He also
lectures at both national and international meetings for medical associations
and healthcare teaching institutions among them are: The American Academy of
Ophthalmology, The American Academy of Dermatology, Westwood Laboratories and
The Mayo Clinic Florida. Mr. Cobo is a
frequent contributor of published articles to Medical Economics, Physician's
Management and Florida Medical Review.
He has also been interviewed by local, regional and national newspapers,
such as the American Medical Association's AMA News and the American
Academy of Ophthalmology's Argus.
